Detection of Missing Takeover Capability by the Orientation Reaction to a Takeover Request

Zusammenfassung

Since drivers in current automated driving systems still need to take over the driving task in certain situations, the question arises whether systems for detecting the driver's state must be considered a necessary requirement for ensuring safe transitions. Additionally, it is discussed which minimal requirements for the driver's state need to be fulfilled depending on the level of automation and if, until now, a detection of the takeover ability is valid at all. Alternatively, it is discussed that the detection of a missing takeover capability could be already much easier to realize. This is backed up by first
empirical results of a driving simulation study, in which the driver's orientation reaction to a takeover request is recorded and associated with the driver's takeover performance.
