Reaching Euro 7 targets with a with a burner-based diesel aftertreatment system: an experimental study

With the disclosure of Euro 7 proposal, the European Commission set more stringent requirements in terms of pollutant emission limits especially on real driving tests where boundary conditions for valid trip have been extended. To achieve the proposed targets, it is crucial to bring the Exhaust AfterTreatment System (ATS) into the catalysts’ maximum efficiency temperature window in the shortest time possible. To robustly achieve that goal on Diesel applications, an external device delivering heat in the exhaust stream independently of the engine operating conditions is required. In this work, a diesel fuel burner device was integrated into an ATS of a current production engine to experimentally assess its capability to support tail pipe emission reduction. A virtual HW environment was used to develop a control SW to coordinate management of engine, burner and ATS. The same virtual environment was exploited to run a first estimation of emission conversion. Input to these simulations were real engine measurements, following a consolidated approach for ATS layout screening.
