Summary

In the Collaborative Research Centre 339 "Digital Twin of the Road System" of the German Research Foundation (DFG), various institutes of RWTH Aachen University and TU Dresden are conducting research on a physical-informational representation of the road system of the future over a period of up to 12 years. The Institute for Automotive Engineering (ika) will integrate the chassis as a data source for the digital twin of the road system. Vehicles hold a central role in shaping the evolution of the digital twin, serving as the primary users of the road system. This symbiotic relationship between the road and vehicles is established through the chassis, which encompasses critical vehicle subsystems, including the tyres. The contact patch, where the tyre the road surface, plays a pivotal role in power transmission. This interaction is not only fundamental to understanding vehicle dynamics but also offers a wealth of intricate insights into the characteristics of the road surface.
