Zusammenfassung

Upcoming vehicle generations will provide fault-tolerant on-board power supply systems and an increasing level of driving automation. These changes contribute to the applicability of Steer-by-Wire (SbW) steering systems, which allow to decouple the steering wheel from the control loop during automated driving and to center it at 0 deg. The dormant steering wheel can thus be employed for non-driving related purposes such as an HMI for the vehicle infotainment system. Thereby new possibilities for future car cockpit concepts arise, seeking to create enhanced customer value. As long as autonomous functions cannot handle all driving conditions, there will still be situations where the driver is requested to take over control. With a driver override, automated steering control is withdrawn and manual control is instantly regained. The thereby occurring angle offset between steering wheel and road wheels is quickly compensated without distracting the driver. Hereby, a seamless transition between automated and manual driving is achieved.
