Highly Dynamic Torque Control for Range Extenders with Rolling Torque Compensation

The NVH targets for range extenders are very strict, as they should not compromise the experience of electric driving. A rolling torque compensation (FEVcom) eliminates the excitation of the vehicle body. It requires a rigid gear drive to connect the combustion engine and gearbox, which leads to rattle. The feasibility of a mechatronic
rattle elimination is investigated. For this study, a generator control for high dynamics is developed. The control is validated on a range extender test bench with rolling torque compensation. Advanced current controllers increase the generator torque bandwidth from 1.14 kHz to 1.67 kHz. The 99% quantile of the acceleration
amplitude is reduced by up to 63%. The control strategy decreases the generator efficiency by less than 3.5 percentage points for medium to high combustion engine loads.
