Zusammenfassung

To demonstrate the concept of ethanol and diesel dual fuel combustion, tests were carried out on a 250mm bore medium speed four-stroke single cylinder research engine at the LEC GmbH. Maximum substitution ratios were determined at multiple engine operating conditions consistent with a standard locomotive duty cycle. The objective of the testing was to characterize performance parameters such as emissions and efficiency and to identify limitations to dual fuel operation. For some engine speed and load conditions, limitations to dual fuel operation were encountered, including pre-ignition, knocking, maximum peak cylinder pressure, combustion instability and elevated exhaust temperatures. The effect of several performance parameters on ethanol substitution ratios was investigated including diesel injection timing and rail pressure, ethanol pressure, temperature and injection timing, manifold air pressure, manifold air temperature, engine backpressure, and compression ratio.
