Zusammenfassung
The ambitious targets set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for reducing the greenhouse gas emissions from shipping are very challenging and require radical actions to be taken by all the maritime sector’s key players. EU Project ENGIMMONIA, joined from 22 partners from 8 countries under RINA Consulting coordination, tackles decarbonization of the shipping sector in multiple ways: (i) promoting ammonia as the cleanest and most promising fuel for shipping sector, also providing a solution to N2O emission that can be properly treated by an EATS (Exhaust Air Treatment System). (ii) demonstrating clean energy solutions for on-board electricity and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), already proved for terrestrial applications, but still facing non-technical/regulatory challenges in the maritime sector (i.e. Waste heat recovery, WHR, and solar photovoltaic, PV). (iii) fostering replicability of these technologies at business, regulatory, policy and naval classification level, interacting with on-going international initiatives (IMO, EMSA, IACS etc.), to guarantee ENGIMMONIA innovations wide acceptance. All the technologies, which represent the core of the project, will be demonstrated at TRL>5 in real scale engines and on board of three different vessels, thus proving their replicability on board of different type of vessels.
