The Future of the Automotive Value Chain 2025 and Beyond

No one has a crystal ball to predict the future. Nevertheless, there are some signposts to future developments to be seen almost every day, when it comes to the future of the automotive ecosystem: market launches of autonomous cars, press statements of suppliers under pressure due to the shift in drivetrain technology, or
established OEMs like Volvo announcing their latest connectivity features, just to name a few. This article is addressing the disruptive situation in the automotive ecosystem with regards to potential effects on the automotive value chain. Based on a large number of interviews with experts, more than 60 drivers have been identified that are most likely to shape the future of the automotive value chain. These drivers were ranked and then fused into four scenarios, giving an outline of what the automotive value chain might look like in 2025. Illustrated by a model of a generic OEM, recommendations are derived for six key strategic fields of action of every OEM's transformation agenda.
