Summary
Due to their concept supercharged engines have a higher damping of the intake noise than naturally aspirated engines. Charge-air cooler, compressor or turbocharger and a long intake duct lead together to a high reduction of the sound pressure level and weakly marked main engine orders. Furthermore, according to the damping of these components the orifice noise level is not sensitive to load and speed range. The resulting engine sound quality is bad, the performance of the engine can no longer be transferred into acoustic feedback. Measures like the reduction of air cleaner volume won’t be sufficient to replace a good engine sound. Therefore, MAHLE has developed an engine-sound-system, which can be used for supercharged engines, too. It is realised by a side branch at the high pressure duct between intake manifold and charge-air cooler. This side branch leads into a resonance volume with an elastic membrane, which is specially designed to meet the overpressure specifications. The sound in the car interior can be modified by variation of duct length, duct diameter, resonance volume or membrane properties. Even the design of a definite engine sound is possible. It is very impressive to see the emotional contribution to a vehicle being improved by such an engine-sound-system, the listening pleasure now coming along with the driving pleasure.
