Summary

Thermal management of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) is an essential function to increase the driving range in cold conditions, enable fast charging speed and provide sufficient thermal comfort inside the cabin. An EU level ban of harmful per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is planned, which has an impact on currently used refrigerants worldwide.

The integrated thermal management system of Sanden and Vitesco Technologies enables the additional degree of freedom of flexible and demand oriented realization of various heating and cooling options for the cabin and battery with minimum package. The indirect system consists of a compact refrigerant unit with the natural refrigerant propane (R290) and a heat energy distribution system realized by a water distribution module with water/glycol. This provides several advantages such as flexible adaptation, reduced complexity, reduced effort within the vehicle manufacturing process and finally system cost reduction for the OEM.

In this article Vitesco Technologies and Sanden will present the system setup based on customer requirements for a C-class vehicle. The performance of the system is demonstrated based on simulation data for the relevant key requirements to prove performance for heating and cooling of relevant components and inside the cabin.
