Intelligent Driving through Advanced Propulsion System Control to Reduce Fuel Consumption

Summary
Global regulatory targets and customer demand are driving the automotive industry to improve vehicle fuel efficiency, including through improvements to the internal combustion engine complementing an accelerating shift toward electrification. Proper systems integration and controls development are key to realizing improved fuel efficiency from these changes, and a next step in the evolution of such propulsion system controls is to incorporate information not typically associated with the powertrain. Advanced driver assistance systems, vehicle connectivity systems and cloud applications can provide information to the propulsion controls that further improves vehicle fuel efficiency by enabling a shift from instantaneous optimization of fuel consumption, to optimization over a route. Benefits can be realized at all levels of electrification, from combustion engines, to hybrid and full electric vehicles, and at all levels of vehicle
automation. Development is ongoing at Delphi Technologies to leverage connected and automated vehicle information to improve propulsion system and vehicle efficiency, an effort we term Intelligent Driving. The present paper summarizes the objectives and scope of our work in progress, including the mechanization and build of a demonstration vehicle. Our target for this demonstration vehicle is to deliver more than 10 % average fuel consumption benefit from Intelligent Driving, under a variety of realworld driving conditions. Results are presented from both the simulation work and the in-vehicle testing.
