Summary

The presentation describes the potential of a SI engine concept based on a combination of variable compression and charging. Two variable compression systems – one continuously variable and a two-step system – are presented. Both systems give the possibility to adapt the compression ratio to the engine thermodynamic needs and component related limitations throughout the entire engine operation map. The paper focuses on the variable compression application on SI engines and especially on charged SI engines using high charging rates. Results are presented from engine investigations on test bench as well as results coming from intensive vehicle investigations using continuously variable compression...
