Summary

Tomorrow’s powertrains must and will be climate-neutral. By no means, however, will they be the same in all areas. It is incumbent on globally operating companies such as Bosch to understand the diversity of the various mobility solutions and fully address the needs of all applications. Therefore, if we are to achieve a 100-percent reduction in the carbon emissions of new vehicles in Europe by 2035, we must be able to utilize all technological means to achieve this target. Due to existing vehicle fleets on today’s roads and when looking at other parts of the world, internal combustion engines will continue to power passenger cars and, in particular, commercial vehicles for some time. Yet with more efficient powertrains and by using renewable fuels, these vehicles can also make an important contribution to global climate protection. 

Batteries and fuel cells enable climate-neutral mobility. As a result, they will continue to gain in significance – on a large scale and at a rapid pace – as indeed will the hydrogen engine. Bosch is playing a leading role in all three technological fields and is investing heavily in hydrogen-based technologies. In the interests of effective climate protection, however, Bosch will not only make use of hydrogen but will also contribute to its production. To this end, the company is commencing development of subsystems for electrolyzers. By the end of the decade, we will therefore commit up to 500 million euros to this endeavor – with half of this sum to be invested prior to the market launch, which is scheduled for as early as 2025. At the heart of the Bosch hydrogen-electrolysis solution will be the stack, which is combined with power electronics, sensors, and a control unit to form a smart module. ...
