Summary
Diesel powertrains continue to be an important part of the Volkswagen AG powertrain portfolio when it comes to meeting customer needs and achieving the company's CO2 targets. This article presents the new EA288 evo engine generation that was introduced in 2018 and has now been used with a transverse installation for the first time. The article also covers the advanced measures taken to reliably meet the EU6d emission standard and boost additional efficiency potentials. In terms of exhaust gas aftertreatment, development focused on implementing an innovative dual SCR (selective catalytic reduction) catalytic converter system, so called “twin dosing”, and on advanced measures for intelligent exhaust temperature management. Statistical analyses of real-driving emissions (RDE) during the development phase prove the effectiveness of the measures taken. At the same time, the engine is also prepared to meet additional future emissions regulations. In addition to the potential electrification of the powertrain, the use of renewable fuels also holds further potentials for the engine in the future. The new EA288 evo for the EU6d emission standard, which will go into production starting in 2020, will be further proof that modern diesel engines make an active and important contribution to environmental protection in terms of the overall CO2 analysis.
