Summary
The uptake of battery electric trucks (BETs) and buses is accelerating due to the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Various charging technologies are evolving, coherent standards and legislative frameworks are crucial for mass deployment.
High power chargers with CCS connectors cater to both light and heavy-duty vehicles. They were tested under controlled conditions: charging a BET in a climate-controlled chamber as well as in a power hardware-in-the-loop setup. Both revealed that BETs require higher power levels for longer times. Dedicated charging technologies for BETs address the limitations of light-duty charging systems: The fast charger architecture from SBRS is designed for high power, efficient charging of electric buses, whilst their Module Based Charger architecture is highly scalable. Evolving from CCS technology, Megawatt Charging Systems (MCS) offer very fast on-the-go charging at 1 MW of power. First MCS trucks were tested with a combined MCS/CCS charger setup and insightful observations shared with the CharIN MCS task force. Battery swapping offers an even faster alternative, with quick replacement of batteries taking only 6 to 8 minutes.
A review of total cost of ownership analyses indicates that BETs could become cost-competitive with internal combustion engine trucks by 2030, driven by declining battery costs and lower maintenance expenses.
