Summary
The new Infiniti 3.0L twin-turbocharger engine VR30DDTT is launched as a successor to the VQ37VHR engine. This engine is a direct descendant of the VQ engine series which has been a multi award winner all over the world. It offers superior driving performance combined with good environmental performance. A sharp throttle response and smoothness were important features required to be carried over from previous generation as DNA of Infiniti V6 engine. To achieve these features direct injection, small turbine and compressor with speed sensor, high response electric motor intake VTC and short circuit CAC system were applied. Despite having a small turbocharger to ensure good response, outstanding power was achieved thanks to the turbine speed sensor which allowed use of over 90% revolution limit at static condition making full use of turbo performance. Fuel economy was improved by 7% over the predecessor engine. To ensure that this engine would be preconditioned for compliance with future exhaust gas emission regulations, technologies such as; cylinder bore spray coating with mirror finish, integrated exhaust manifold, multi flow controlled thermal management, variable displacement oil pump and electric controlled waste gate were applied. This paper describes details of this new engine with highlights of the applied technologies and development procedures which have contributed to the highly balanced performances of the engine.
