Summary

In 2008 Daimler Trucks initially introduced the completely new developed heavy duty engine platform with the DD15 in the North American market. Since then, the engineering focus has been threefold: 1. Roll-out of the platform to different markets and truck brands of the company. 2. Adapt the platform to different emission and legislative standards. 3. Enable high commonality across four displacements and different markets to maximize scale effects. Known as Detroit Diesel DD16, DD15, DD13, Mercedes-Benz OM473, OM471, OM470 as well as Fuso 6R10, the engine is today running under the vehicle brands of Freightliner, Western Star, Mercedes-Benz, Setra and Fuso, as well as MTU and is considered as the benchmark in fuel economy, reliability and drivability. Yet, after already many evolutionary improvements in the last years, the platform will now face a major innovation step.
