Summary

The low emission limit values valid in the expanded usage space of “Real Driving” can barely be covered by the conventional “Engineering Target” approach. In order to be able to develop in a cost-efficient and focused way, methods are required that secure robustness of the fleet during the development phase. What is challenging is to combine the real usage profiles with varying environmental conditions, component tolerances and component aging and to consider these factors in the development process. For this purpose, the model-based development environment provides ideal conditions, as component characteristics and environmental conditions are freely adjustable and additionally, the simulation works in a reproducible way. Nevertheless, the enormous complexity can only be controlled by applying statistical methods. Examples from the area of commercial vehicles and passenger cars are given.
