Summary

With the rise of electric powertrains and autonomous driving, cars have transformed into cyber-physical systems, leading to a significant increase of software in E/E architectures.

The development of such E/E architectures requires alignment between OEMs and suppliers, especially between the different development disciplines. The traditional V-model fails to comprehensively synchronize the different working styles and innovation cycles between multiple disciplines. The functional V-cycle-model has been introduced as an improved approach to harmonize the different development disciplines based on a common function structure. However, the software development teams face further challenges, such as increased regulatory requirements or lacking traceability which the previous work on the functional V-cycle-model did not fully address. This paper focuses on further developing the functional V-cycle-model with a major focus on software development, offering guidelines for creating an end-to-end data model that supports modular software architectures. A case study highlights the benefits of this approach.
