Summary
Compared to single-axle driven vehicles, all-wheel drive vehicles offer better traction and greater driving performance. This applies in particular to the on-demand all-wheel drive technology, a technology that is the predominant standard in most AWD vehicles today. GKN and RWTH Aachen University have developed an AWD system for significant CO2 savings with an optional 48 V hybrid module for mild hybridization. The usual extra fuel consumption of an AWD system is reduced to one third with the newly developed highly efficient AWD components.
