Summary

With the transition towards more climate-neutral mobility of the future, a further diversification of favourable powertrain solutions is expected. Crucial requirements such as efficiency, adaptability, variability and comfort make the continuously variable transmission (CVT) interesting to look at. It supports a more energy-efficient use of both ICE and electric motors, while providing the high comfort level that is crucial for autonomous driving. This study presents optimized hybrid and electric CVT solutions including new pushbelt products with a higher maximum torque and better power density levels. A modular CVT design with downsized pushbelt variator for electrified powertrains is proposed that covers the C-segment all the way to light commercial vehicle segments. KPI improvements and wide variety of possibilities make CVT a valuable contribution to a future of diversified powertrains.
