Summary
WinGD has committed to delivering solutions for the decarbonisation of international shipping, in line with the strategic targets set out by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). In particular, new product lines capable of using renewable fuels such as ammonia and methanol were developed over the last few years, with first deliveries of the resulting X-DF-A and X-DF-M engine models during the first half of 2025 marking important milestones. Building on preparatory work and making use of upfront investments into testing as well as simulation infrastructure and capacity, the development followed a pronounced frontloading approach. This enabled the early selection of the most promising concept and the timely validation of the choice of combustion concept as well as key design features. In the solution design, safety considerations played a decisive role. Results obtained on the first production engines confirmed the potential of the new X-DF-A and X-DF-M engines to achieve greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction levels exceeding 90%, without compromising the emissions of regulated pollutants or efficiency. The technology successfully demonstrated on these first executions is now rapidly being rolled out to the complete engine size range.
