Summary

This contribution summarises on the basis of recent studies customer requirements regarding future vehicles concepts and their drivetrain designs and also shows several development directions for alternative drivetrains. The discussion of the megatrends emission reduction, urbanisation and peak-oil, influences the future demand of mobility. The megatrends implicate an enlargement of the possible solution space for full vehicle concepts. Two studies coordinated by the “Institut für Kraftfahrzeuge (ika)” of RWTH Aachen University show in detail the changed general conditions of mobility needs of the next customer generation.
