Summary

"Charging like fueling" represents a decisive milestone for the everyday practicality of electric mobility. This vision has recently been demonstrated by the Mercedes-AMG GT XX prototype, achieving charging power of over 1 megawatt (up to 1,041 kW) with a respective energy transfer of 17.3 kWh in just one minute - equivalent to approximately 125 km range according to WLTP. The presentation and respective paper provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of EV charging performance. Using the P3 Charging Index (1.0 = 300 km of real-world range in 20 minutes), we analyze leading performers including the Lotus Emeya (402 kW), Porsche Taycan (325 kW), and BYD's Super e-Platform vehicles achieving 10C charging rates. We examine technical limitations arising from battery technology, thermal management, power electronics, connector standards, and grid infrastructure, as well as design trade-offs between charging speed, battery longevity, and cost. A critical analysis reveals that while "charging like fueling" is technologically achievable for premium segments, it is not economically necessary for EV market success. However, its psychological value as a barrier-breaking achievement and confidence-building feature is significant for broader market adoption. This paper presents a differentiated view of current developments, identifies realistic optimization pathways, and assesses market relevance through the lens of both technical feasibility and customer value.
