Summary

While an increase of powertrain electrification is expected in the future, the gasoline engine will still have the greatest share of LDV powertrains. Exhaust gas emission legislations in the worldwide markets are requiring further reductions of gaseous and particulate emissions by vehicle manufacturers. Additionally, a verification of real driving emissions (RDE) during vehicle operation on the street is demanded in Europe, China and India. At the same time, the worldwide legislations ask for further reductions of tank-to-wheel CO2 emissions. Moreover, the end customer is expecting functional benefits, e.g. regarding driving performance, fuel consumption and comfort/NVH. Gasoline engines with direct injection and turbocharging can contribute to fulfilling the aforementioned requirements by the manufacturers and are expected to gain significant market share. Here, direct injection acts as an enabler for the combination of high charging levels and increased compression ratios. It offers highly efficient catalyst heating strategies for ultra-low emission concepts. Further optimisation of the direct injection system can provide an important contribution to a reduction of engine-internal pollutant formation by more precise fuel delivery and improved mixture formation. Therefore, Bosch has developed a new generation of gasoline direct injection systems, which is currently introduced into series production and rolled out into the worldwide Bosch production network. This paper presents key aspects of the component development as well as functional results that have been achieved by using the respective technical solutions.
