Summary
Hybrid technology is one option to reduce the CO2 emissions of passenger cars. The biggest CO2- benefit can be achieved if the hybrid battery is recharged externally by plug-in technology. This paper analyses the efficiency of 3 different hybrid concepts by reverse simulation, namely plug-in hybrid (PHV), range extended electric vehicle (REEV) with serial powertrain configuration and RE-EV with parallel powertrain configuration. For each concept it is crucial to optimize the size and design of the individual components (battery, electric motor(s) and combustion engine) to achieve best efficiency. However, the trade-off between efficiency and funto- drive needs to be taken into account in order to satisfy the customer.
