Summary

The comparison between a modern 3.0 liter 6 cylinder BMW production engine and 3 liter V 10 BMW Formula 1 engine shows up, that different development targets lead to different results. The Formula 1 engine is designed specifically for maximum power output under defined operating conditions. Very good airflow even at very high engine speeds is a prerequisite to fulfill the requirements. The production engine not only has to meet customer expectations and brand specific values but must also fulfill requirements for emissions and fuel consumption with good reliability over the lifecycle of the car. At first glance, both engines cannot be compared, but each in its own way shows the highest standards of engineering.
