Summary
The new 2.9l V6 TFSI in the new Audi RS 5 is the latest highlight of Audi’s V6 TFSI family of engines, first launched in mid-2016 with the 3.0l V6 TFSI. The charging concept of the new V6 TFSI featuring two turbochargers in the inner V delivers short gas paths and supreme responsiveness.
The engine develops 331 kW of power and 600 Nm of torque in the range from 1900 rpm to 5000 rpm. In addition to achieving the typical Audi attributes of dynamics and sportiness, the development focus was on downsizing in all areas, so as to advance reductions in CO2 emissions and lightweight construction in this power segment as in others. Equipped with these attributes, the 2.9l V6 TFSI will be the worthy successor to the highly successful high-revving V8 FSI naturally aspirated engine in the previous generation RS 5.
The now extended V6 TFSI engine family, featuring power outputs from 210 kW to 331 kW, offers the possibility to substitute a range of different Volkswagen Group engines. In the future the 2.9l V6 TFSI allows the fitting of an electric compressor called EAV (German abbreviation for: elektrisch angetriebener Verdichter), combined with a belt alternator starter (BAS) and a 48V electrical system to create a mild hybrid concept. In such a configuration, the “sports engine” of the RS 5 will be turned into a supremely assured, comfortable and economical power unit.
