Summary

The introduction of the completely redesigned 2.0 litre S.I. engine with direct injection and turbo charging is the logical further development of BMW programme „Efficient Dynamics“. The new engine is used in the performance range up to approximately 180 kW and replaces the 3.0 litre 6-cylinder suction engines. The new engine distinguishes itself by an all-aluminium design and by the very efficient BMW-specific TVDI combustion principle that combines direct injection with central injector position, fully-variable intake valve control and turbo charging. A highlight is the first-time large-scale implementation of a new cylinder liner technology by means of arc welding, creating new liberties in the geometric and thermal design of the crankcase. Within its performance class the new engine assumes a top position with regard to fuel consumption due to the consequent optimisation of the basic engine, a complex heat management and the use of various fuel-saving technologies, like demandbased drive of auxiliary units.
