Summary

Safety requirements in autonomous driving and steer-by-wire motivate development of redundancies in electronic steering systems. Therefore, the potential of differential braking as backup system for steering actuators is presented. An analytical approach is made based on a linearized single-track model extended by a front axle steering system and differential brake forces. As differential braking impacts longitudinal vehicle dynamics the system is particularly investigated concerning vehicle speed and deceleration. Driving maneuvers are being specified and a prediction is made towards maximum potential for lateral vehicle control.
