Summary

Although Hydrogen combustion engines are not a fundamentally new technology, the interest and speed of development has increased enormously over the last few years. The motivation is based on the possibility of CO2 free operation with lowest emissions in combination with an extremely robust and cost effective drive system, produced on existing facilities.

However, there are still some tasks to be solved on the way to series production of such a drivetrain with high performance. Based on research activities of our institute since more than 20 years, the state of the art and potentials of such a technology for series application are described.
