Summary

The launch of the new Detroit DD15 engine in the North American market in January 2021 was the first milestone in the introduction of the newly re-engineered heavy-duty engine family of Daimler Truck AG. Continued technological leadership in fuel efficiency, reliability and an overall superior customer experience are the main characteristics of this engine series. To achieve these lofty goals and remain the North American market leader, no stone was left unturned. The thermodynamics of the engine has been completely redesigned with a new combustion layout and optimized gas exchange. In order to further increase fuel efficiency, the turbocharger developed and manufactured at Daimler Truck was re-matched with a new EGR transport design. The large fuel efficiency step is also enabled by a completely new aftertreatment system. The new aftertreatment design minimizes backpressure, is compact for fast warm up, enhances urea mixing, and optimizes SCR uniformity to maximize NOx reduction. It also features a new hydrocarbon mixing design and new diesel oxidation catalyst layout for optimal particulate filter regeneration. The global Daimler Truck engineering team, taking a systems view with customer experience in mind, has developed a new controls and operation strategy so the new engine layout and new aftertreatment system complement each other. The new controls strategy delivers optimal fuel efficiency while managing the complex emissions environment these products face in operation. The controls strategy also includes a robust monitoring system to ensure emissions full useful life compliance.
