Summary

The regulation on real-driving emissions (RDE) which will soon come into effect is the first regulation governing particulate count and nitrogen-oxide emissions from real on-road driving. It will result in a noticeable reduction of local nitrogen-oxide pollution in cities. And even under this changed circumstances the diesel engine will be able to maintain or even further lower its CO2 level. Apart from the classic approaches of optimizing the turbocharging unit and improving the combustion and thermodynamic processes with the help of advanced injection systems electrification will open up further potential. The primary goal, to comply with the RDE requirements, can be optimized through the systematic design of the combustion method and its adaptation to the active aftertreatment components selected. Furthermore, improvement of the transient emission behavior during load changes will require optimized charging and intelligent control functions. In this context, optimizing the temperature management of the engine and the exhaust-gas aftertreatment will play a pivotal role. If this combination of measures is implemented in a systematic approach, marked improvements of real-driving emissions can be achieved without a significant fuel penalty. Based upon the assumptions made in this paper nitrogen-oxide emissions can be achieved under real-driving conditions which will contribute to meeting the legal NO2 immission standards even at critical hotspots such as the Stuttgart Neckartor.
