Summary

The most relevant drivers of the worldwide passenger car market are cost reduction and fuel consumption reduction. The challenge in combustion engine development is further improvement of efficiency under increasing cost pressure. Downsizing is a promising route for further reduction of fuel consumption for gasoline as well as diesel engines. Key criteria at the resulting high specific performance levels are the complexity of the powertrain due to drivability requirements as well as future emission limits and the impact of increased mechanical and thermal loads on the base engine structure.
