Summary

The title of this paper may sound strange. However, public discussions and many studies assume sufficient green power to charge batterie-electric vehicles at any time. Why is it and what is going wrong? For generations, we have become accustomed to the fact that there is always enough electricity from the grid available at any time of the day or year to meet our demand. In contrast, this will not be the case with wind and solar energy, which are known to be the dominant, but highly fluctuating power sources of the future. Today’s easy to store fossil fuels are available at all times and in line with demand, whether as fuel for power plants or for refueling vehicles. Electricity can only be stored economically for a few hours using batteries. Easy to store hydrogen and liquid e-fuels are therefore indispensable for a climate-neutral and needs-based energy supply in transportation.
