Summary

Synthetic fuels get more and more importance in our future energy supply, especially in the mobility sector. They not only earn benefit from an broad usable primary energy base including renewals, but also, based on their designable molecular structure, there is a big possibility for further improvement of today’s and future combustion systems. Especially homogenous auto ignited combustion systems relay on the specifics of fuels. During our development it was also recognized that today’s specifications like Cetane number and boiling value are not sufficient in this matter. Simultaneous development of fuel and combustion makes it necessary to use the full range of all development tools. First basic investigations of fuels with a Fuel Ignition Tester (FIT), in pressure chambers and one-stroke-engines demonstrate differences in ignition and burning behaviour. Simulation of in cylinder flow, mixture preparation and combustion are necessary tools. Only based on those investigations verification and development on engine bench and in vehicle makes sense. The benefits of advanced fuels are demonstrated in border line areas of conventional systems. Synthetic fuels are enabler for more sustainable engine usage.

Lectures from the International Vienna Motor Symposium can be ordered from the Austrian Society of Automotive Engineers (ÖVK). Lectures can only be purchased in the form of the complete conference documents, individual lectures are not available.
When placing an order, please note the year/name of the event (e.g. "45th International Vienna Motor Symposium 2024") for the further ordering process.
