Summary
Achieving high efficiency is crucial in the automotive sector to advance the development of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) that are both cost-effective and practical for a wider customer base. In this context, CHERY and AVL collaborated to explore methods for enhancing the overall efficiency of BEVs, with the primary objectives of extending driving range and increasing range recharging performance accelerating charging times. One significant result of this partnership was the creation of a highly efficient Electric Drive Unit (EDU), capable of enabling vehicle energy consumption below 10 kWh per 100 km and maintaining an average cycle efficiency exceeding 94% under the Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Cycle (WLTC) and China Light-duty vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), as measured at the charging terminal.
This publication presents the findings from this joint development initiative, emphasizing the integration of an existing EDU design into a C-segment vehicle specifically engineered to maximize energy efficiency. The paper details the methodology employed to tailor and optimize the pre-existing EDU concept for this application, including dimensioning and selection of key components such as electric motor, transmission, and inverter. Additionally, it discusses the refinement of the operational strategy to further enhance performance in the target vehicle. Evidence of achieving the targeted efficiency goals is provided through hardware testing on a dedicated test bench as well as data collected from vehicle measurements.
