Summary

The paper describes the motorization of a sportive vehicle by MAGNA STEYR. One attribute of the concept vehicle is the operation with an environmental friendly fuel. CNG was selected for that purpose. At the basis of an 1,6 ltr supercharged gasoline series engine, a powertrain for monovalent CNG operation was concepted and realized. Therefore natural gas storing components and such for mixture formation and a new ECU have to be chosen. At the Institute of IC Engines of the Univ. of Technology in Graz, the new ECU was calibrated and the engine optimized for running with CNG. The activities were carried out on an engine test rig. The settings of the engine to fulfill the requirements on the vehicle dynamics and the optimization of start and comfort functions were carried out during on-vehicle tests. With a monovalent CNG-engine, the sportive vehicle met all demands made on its driving performance and was presented to the public at the IAA 2005 in Frankfurt.
