Summary
This article presents the electric drive system for the new Audi R8 e-tron. The special feature of this sports car is its high-performance electric drive, providing a fully usable stand-alone vehicle propulsion system. At the heart of the system are two permanent magnet synchronous motors which drive the left and right rear wheels respectively. The motors were developed specially for use in the R8 e-tron to feature maximum power density, sporty performance and optimum power utilisation. Based on the latest Audi networking technologies, Flex-Ray communication has been extended to the drive components. The application and balancing of vehicle characteristics, functional reliability and drivability were tested in parallel on the real vehicle from the very beginning, which meant that the development was completed in an exemplary short time.
