Summary
The manual transmissions in BMW cars have long since offered the demanding and sporty orientated established clientele optimum functionality. Regarding handling and noise comfort these gearboxes have represented since their successful launch in 1990, mainly as five-speed transmissions, the benchmark in their class. Especially in terms of the big increase in torque in petrol and diesel engines and as a consequence of trend setting power train concepts a decision to develop the new six-speed boxes has been made within BMW. The realisation of BMW’s objectives has been done by adopting established solutions in combination with trend setting technical detail solutions.
