Summary
Meeting future more stringent emission legislation with DI-Diesel passenger car engines under consideration of fuel consumption improvement and customer requirements needs well adapted injection strategies depending on operating area. Content of this paper of Robert Bosch GmbH are depiction of challenges and potential of key components of Diesel combustion process. In detail the potential of comparatively small dwell times between pilot and main injection with respect to emission and noise behaviour is investigated in selected important engine map areas taken into account dynamic impacts as well. Results pointing out quiet comparable emission levels in nearly entire map area as achieved with conventional injection pattern, but advantages can be detected in pilot quantity tolerance, behaviour under transient conditions and complexity of application.
