Summary

The electric vehicle (EV) market is rapidly evolving, shaped by two key trends: the drive toward rare earth-free motors to mitigate cost and supply chain vulnerabilities, and the expansion of range-extender EVs to deliver greater driving range and charging flexibility. BorgWarner is at the forefront of these advancements, pioneering solutions that address both challenges.
First, BorgWarner’s Electrically-Excited Synchronous Machines (EESMs) offer a magnet-free alternative to rare earth magnet eMotors. These EESM machines leverage advanced electromagnetic design optimization, robust thermal management, scalable inverter and excitation systems, and tailored application strategies to achieve high-performance EV propulsion.
Second, BorgWarner’s next-generation 2-in-1 electric drive system for Range-Extended Electric Vehicles (REEVs) integrates a novel outer rotor topology with a stator-integrated nested inverter. This ultra-compact, high-efficiency solution is engineered for broad power ranges and adaptable voltage architectures, setting new standards in packaging, integration, and cycle efficiency. The next generation system offers standardized interfaces, innovative cooling, and advanced electrical architecture to ensure compatibility across global platforms.
This presentation will examine the technical developments, engineering solutions, and market impact of these integrated propulsion technologies, illustrating how EESM and REEV innovations are contributing to the future of electric mobility.
