Summary

To achieve the EU climate targets in the transport sector, various future propulsion systems for commercial vehicles are competing. Depending on the specific application, each alternative powertrain set-up has its specific advantages. In long-haul truck operation, the economic efficiency of the vehicles is determined by fuel consumption, as an essential part of the ´total cost of ownership´ (TCO). The vehicle's availability over time for the transport task is highly relevant, and tank range as well as refueling time are becoming increasingly important. All of these criteria point to hydrogen as an energy carrier and the use of Fuel Cells for energy conversion in a hybrid powertrain for long-distance transport. The operation of the already available cellcentric Fuel Cell systems (BZA150) in real customer hands confirms the low fuel consumption and tank ranges of up to over 1.000 kilometers, as well as short refueling times of less than 15 minutes.

By the end of this decade, cellcentric will launch the second generation of Fuel Cell systems, called BZA375, which is specifically designed for heavy-duty long-haul transport and aims to reduce fuel consumption by 20% compared to the current vehicles with BZA150. This will be possible in particular through a significantly improved electrochemical efficiency achieved by using new, even more powerful catalyst technologies, as well as by increasing the active area of the Fuel Cell stack. In addition, new materials allow operation at higher operating temperatures and reduce the cooling demands on the vehicle side.
