Development of the H17/24G – The first Korean Gas Engine

Summary
Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) performed jointly together with AVL List GmbH a development project to convert the existing HHI Diesel Engine H17/24 to gas operation. In this paper the conversion, the applied development methodology and the modifications are described. During the conversion especially the cylinder head, the intake and exhaust system, turbocharging, piston, the gas supply as well as the engine control and monitoring system were modified or newly developed. Starting with an initial specification of the engine and the combustion system, based on wide experiences within AVL, the challenging time schedule could be kept and the development targets were reached.
