Summary

Range Extended Electric Vehicles (REEV) are increasingly being recognized worldwide as a parallel path to pure electromobility. When integrating such a range extender powertrain concept into modern BEV vehicle architectures with short overhangs and a wheelbase extended compared to classic vehicle architectures, the limited installation space presents a significant challenge.
Accordingly, this paper presents in detail a package-optimized concept for integrating an internal combustion engine-generator unit into a battery-electric vehicle platform. Since minimal costs and maximum reutilization of existing production facilities were top priorities, the concept of a horizontal engine installation based on a conventional inline four-cylinder engine is presented. The paper demonstrates, using the implementation of the concept in a production electric vehicle—where a vertically installed engine would not fit in either the rear or the front—what modifications would need to be made to such a base engine for this concept. A cost assessment of these engine modifications compares the costs of these changes, including those on the production line, to those of a completely new engine development (such as a boxer engine), including the required investment in a new production line.
