Summary
Due to its design the two-cylinder horizontally opposed engine by BMW Motorrad displays several special features at the charge exchange process. Carburetion is conducted via multi-point injection, whereas positioning of the injection valves shall be executed considering the accommodation of the single throttle valves and the clearly limited package. Furthermore, the intake port in the cylinder head is laid out asymmetrically to accommodate the valve train and the therefore required timing chain. The properties of the charge exchange process deriving from these restrictions were completely described in the interplay of simulation results and test results.
