Summary

Sustainable fuels, like ethanol and methanol can be significant contributors to the decarbonization of the transportation sector. Historically, bio-fuels have been used successfully in many countries from low percentages like E5/E10 to higher concentrations such as E85 in the EU and US. E100 is available in Brazil and a M100 supply chain including decarbonized e-Methanol is under consideration in various locations including China.
Fuels with high alcohol mass fractions present unique challenges but also opportunities for combustion and engine operation and therefore new design considerations for the injection system. Not only must the switch from fossil to decarbonized fuels lead to measurable, real reductions in lifecycle CO2 emissions, but local toxic emissions must continue to be improved compared to the current best in class internal combustion engine applications.
This paper presents the latest PHINIA developments on port and direct injection systems for use with alcohol fuels of up to 100%. The fuel rail, pump, injector and system designs are all presented, including PHINIA’s experience in bringing these products to the market. PHINIA’s developments have enabled it to launch the world’s first 350bar direct injection system for E100 fuels into the Brazilian market beginning in late 2024. Simultaneously, PHINIA is finalizing its systems for serial use with M100 and is engaged in several advanced projects which will be discussed.
