Summary

Already today, Vodafone has over 30 million mobile customers in Germany. For future networked and autonomous driving, Vodafone expects a significant use of its mobile network. In particular, the role as operator and supplier of future mobile network generations (extensions of LTE, 5G) will be important. The new network generation 5G will open up new possibilities in terms of speed and reliability, which are needed for the secure networking of vehicles. LTE and 5G mobile communications will enable completely new services, creating a new market that does not yet exist. The new services can include the networking of road crossings, the support of traffic management, vehicle platooning as well as safety-relevant and efficiency-enhancing functions.

Since 1990, an average of approximately 3.2 million cars have been registered annually in Germany. From 2020, the number of networked and autonomous vehicles will continue to increase. Vodafone aims to connect to at least one-third of the vehicles and provide them with services. An assessment of sales is not possible today as the roles, tasks and value chains for this new market have to develop. It is also the goal of the project to establish and validate possible constellations of the value chain.

The results of KoMoD are to be used in the short term to extend the functionality of existing products and to gradually lead to new products, both on the vehicle side and on the infrastructure side. The use of LTE V2X in the network is planned for the period 2018-2020, and 5G is expected to be introduced from 2020 onwards. Substantial autonomous driving is not expected until 2020-2025.

Vodafone is already a partner to the automotive and supply industry and supplies "connectivity", products and services in cooperation with companies in this market segment. In particular, Vodafone also offers its own solutions and products for nearly all car manufacturers. The current service portfolio includes: Sensor Control Indicators, Stolen Vehicle Tracking, Usage-Based Insurance, My Connected Fleet and My Connected Car.

Vodafone develops products, solutions and services for the automotive sector and / or products in cooperation with customers in the automotive and automotive industry as well as other industrial sectors. Services such as cloud services for business
customers are developed and hosted by Vodafone. The mobile radio network is available with 24,000 base stations in Germany and the innovations developed in the project are to be introduced step by step, e.g. LTE extensions such as LTE-V2X.
