Summary

The Volvo group has committed to have a CO2 neutral product offer by 2040. Important pillars to achieve CO2 neutrality are the BEV and the H2 fuel cell products, but Volvo also recognises the need to keep combustion engines for certain applications, for example operations with very high up-time and/or in very rough environments with high payloads. The development of a H2 engine demonstrator based on the present 750hp 16L platform will be presented in this paper. The collection of experimental data with which to build reliable experimental models have been key in this project. Furthermore, the computational work in both 1 & 3D domains as well as the resulting hardware design changes required to achieve a spark ignited, direct injected H2 internal combustion engine will be outlined. The final design is an engine with a performance to fulfil the very demanding operation of a 16L truck. In addition, the longer-term performance and efficiency development potential with highly advanced boosting systems for ultra-lean, zero emission combustion without exhaust after treatment will be discussed.
