Summary

Solid-state battery cells are being touted as the “next big thing” in electric vehicle technology advancements because of their potentials for high energy density and safety. However, challenges remain in terms of their technical maturity, particularly in manufacturing, cost and performance. The large variety of solid-state battery cell subtypes with individually different characteristics requires application-specific thinking.

In this work, the hurdles for their use in battery systems of electric vehicles are systematically evaluated. Specific examples and a roadmap developed on the basis of research projects, cell manufacturer information, and internal assessments are used to recommend potential initial use cases for this promising technology. Particular attention will be paid to ways of cell integration into battery systems with different cell chemistries. Starting from the fundamentals of solid-state battery cells to battery system design, a pathway to implementation in electric vehicles is outlined. It becomes clear that not all future cell chemistries can be equally integrated into the packs and that the integration of the cells into the pack is cell chemistry specific.
